Welcome to Pulpit & Pew Research Project Archive Site

This is the archived website of Pulpit & Pew, a now-completed interdenominational research project funded by Lilly Endowment to assess the state of the pastorate in the United States. Based at Duke Divinity School, Pulpit & Pew was active from 2001 to 2005 and conducted a nationwide pastor survey, in-depth interviews and conferences and written reports and books. This study was the largest such survey ever conducted of U.S. pastoral leaders. The results of the study served as the basis for numerous books and papers.

The Pulpit & Pew project was the first of several Duke Divinity School-led initiatives on pastoral leadership funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. For more information on Christian Institutional leadership, visit Faith & Leadership, the website of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity School.

Because of the unique nature of this research project, this archived site is being continued and contains a description of the study's methodology, various reports in PDF format and a variety of research articles, lectures, sermons and other writings.
